A Sport For Everyone

Maple Grove Senior High School Trap Boosters Club

Come join us and be part of a diverse team that helps develop hand eye coordination along with understanding safe and proper shotgun handling. Trap shooting only allows shooters to load a single shell at their turn which makes it very safe. Coaches and assistants go over the top with safety and developing our shooters.

Last year there were 34,000 high school students on trap teams. It all started right next to Maple Grove in Plymouth, MN. We have a fall Co-ed team which is a bit more relaxed and then a spring boys team. Both teams will always shoot at the Minnetonka Fish and Game club located north of Elk River, MN about 30 minutes from Maple Grove. Practice and Leagues shoots are always on Wednesday starting at 3:30-5:30PM

❊ FAQs

You’ve got questions,
we’ve got answers

  • All shooting is done at Minnetonka Game and Fish Club in Elk River, MN. Shooting is Wednesday. New members are walked through safety and slowly taught how to shoot

  • cost range from $500-$800 for ammo, coaching, range fees and jersey depending on season.

  • Fall season is short lasting only 8 weeks while spring season runs longer 10-12 weeks.

  • Safety is taken very seriously. First all shooters must have hunter safety. Only one person shoots at a time and only one shell is loaded and only when they are about to shoot. Proper eye wear and hearing protection is enforced at all times. There are extra eyes on all team members and especially on new shooters.

  • It can get cold and windy so we recommend proper shooting gear for colder weather. For extreme weather coaches will cancel practice or shoots. Shoots can be made up prior to the last Friday of the week.

  • No all shooting is done at our range and then we submit our scores. They may be opportunities during season to attend a tournament, but it is elective.

  • A round consist of 25 rounds with 5 rounds at each station. So a great round would be 25. We like to say a consistent shooter shooting above 19 can letter. Competition consist of two rounds.

  • Shooting is like golf. You start with just any old set of clubs to learn the basics and then as you progress you want a better fit, or you are just okay with the casual game. Many shooters will use their field guns. For smaller shooters they may use a 20 gage. Any type from Semi-automatic, pump, or break action. If the shooter is opposite handed overly tall or small in the long run they may need a better fitted gun. Used pump action Mossberg 500 or Remington 870 can be picked up in the $200-$300 range. Trap specific guns have a flatter comb and pattern at what is called a 60/40 or 60% of shot above target.

  • This is the great thing about trap. You have a diverse group of team members. You have hunters but you also have some quiet types just looking for something to do and be challenged. You also have multi-sport athletes.

  • Minnetonka game & fish is open to public sunday 12-3 and Wednesday after 5pm. Metro Gun Club in Blaine is public. Plymouth gun club is open to shooters Saturday mornings. They all have deals for youth. Good chance if you go to Minnetonka you will see the coaches or assistance. Of course they cannot coach in within certain windows but are there to help.
